Future SelfThere is a really great way to accelerate the process of bringing lasting, positive change to your life and it works no matter what situation you’re in or what it is you want to change. It doesn’t require a huge time investment or spending any money or signing up to any sort of programme. It simply uses the vastly-underutilised ability that we all have calledĀ the Imagination.

It might be that you want to lose weight, improve your confidence, have more money, have less stress, get a better job, recover from an illness, change your relationship status, solve a particular life challenge, anything. Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?

Over the years I’ve used this technique to help people create the changes in their lives that they’ve struggled with, and it’s one of the most successful approaches I know. And it’s also one of the simplest. It works in three parts.

First, using your imagination, create the ideal version of you – the version that represents the state that you want to be – your Future Self. If weight loss is your goal, then it would be the trimmer, more energetic, healthier you. If it’s money, then it would be the wealthier, happier you with more freedom to do what you want.

Then, really go into detail in your imagination with this. How will you look? How will you feel? What will you be wearing? Where will you live? Who are your friends? How will you react to things differently? What will others say about you? What will your days look like? If it helps, you might choose to crystallise your FutureĀ  Self by drawing it, writing about it, defining it, collecting photos that relate to it, anything that works for you. Or, you can just hold the detailed vision in your imagination, it’s up to you.

Then, on a daily basis, or whenever you can, take a couple of minutes to reconnect with the Future Self you’ve created. Go back over all the details. Bring them to life for a short time in your imagination. Feel how it is to be them for a few moments. Make them top-of-mind, a priority in your thinking. Other things in your head may need to be shoved over to make room, but if you’re truly passionate about becoming your Future Self then this will be easy. Live with your Future Self until they’re absorbed into your current self.

At this point, your actions and behaviours will naturally gravitate towards those of your Future Self, without you needing to exert much effort. That’s all there is to it. If it’s about weight loss, then you might naturally feel the need to change your diet or to exercise more, instead of following a regimented programme and struggling with it. If it’s about money, you might find your spending habits changing and your ability to act on opportunities increasing. If it’s about relationships, then you’ll naturally gravitate to and attract the people who are more aligned with your Future Self. The key to making this work is in the third part, to maintain the passion and excitement about your future self and to stay connected to it over a long period of time.

People who have been through this process, myself included, often suddenly realise one day that they have become the Future Self they created all that time ago. And it just happened naturally, without struggle and without excessive effort. They simply re-directed the flow of their life rather than trying to swim against it.
