Sometimes, when you look at the way we’ve structured our society, you wonder why on earth we’ve done things the way we have. It seems like we’re in a never-ending cycle of work and debt, and only at the end of our lives, when everything is paid off, can we step off the merry-go-round and really pursue the things we love, the things that have meaning to us.
There’s very clear conditioning in our society that the idea of doing what you love is not a practical career path, because it won’t make you the money you might need to live a comfortable life. Instead, it’s easier to do something else that you can tolerate, that will allow you to support yourself and your family financially, that will set you up for a happy retirement when your economic useful life is over.
But this conditioning is starting to be worn away by the steady increase in people who are finding innovative ways to do the work they love. Ways that allow them to hop off the merry-go-round of working to pay bills and actually find a work situation that brings them both financial support AND fulfilment. It’s as if we’re coming to the end of a long cycle of intense focus on just getting by, and now we’re ready as a society to explore ways to express our full potential.
But if you’ve spent years and years working in a particular industry, climbing the ladder and doing relatively well at it, the idea of suddenly changing direction altogether or starting your own venture is definitely a bit daunting. If you have a desire to be doing something else that expresses who you are in a more complete way, how do you overcome the conditioning that has gotten you into this situation in the first place? How to you get to do what you love without going through hardship in order to get there?
Well, there actually is a process. I’ve been through it myself, and I’ve helped many others get through it as well. It requires you to work with your excitement and passion in a way you may not have thought about before. It requires you to understand your belief systems, your limiting beliefs, which are the very things that have stopped you doing this up until this point. It requires a degree of bravery and fortitude, and a strong desire to be the best you can be.
The process begins when you formulate a clear idea of what it is that you want to be doing in life. But rather than focusing on what it is you want to achieve, this is more a focus on WHO it is that you want to be. This is one of the most critical steps in the process, because it sets up the right mindset for change.
It then moves into a phase that leverages excitement and passion as the driving engine and organising principle of life. Following your excitement allows the things that don’t align with your vision to gradually fall away, and be replaced by those things that do align with where you want to be. This can be done in a series of small steps, each one a stepping stone on the path to your ultimate destination.
Inevitably in this process there is a need to be able to let go of those things that don’t align, and this is where it’s important to work with your limiting beliefs. These limiting beliefs will make it seem like it’s difficult let those things go, that it’s too risky, that you’ll fail and be poor for ever. Sometimes these belief structures have been ingrained since childhood, so it can take some focus to be able to shift them.
Once a few beliefs get shifted, it opens up the space for you to ‘flip the switch’ – to be in a place where you identify more with who you are becoming than who you are now. This is a major milestone in the process, because from this point forward, all you have to do is be yourself in order to create the lifestyle that goes along with that.
All of this happens at a pace that works for you, so there is no jumping off a cliff before you’ve attached your parachute. It may take some time, but it will absolutely get you there. Can you imagine a life where you’re successfully doing the work you love? Can you imagine a world where most people love their work? It’s not a pipe dream any more, it’s becoming a reality right now. Are you ready?
